For nursing homes (skilled nursing), Medicare covers a short stay after at least three days as a hospital inpatient: $0 a day for days 1 to 20, then $217 a day for days 21 to 100 in 2026. After day 100, families pay the full cost unless another program covers it.
What moves the price
- Room: a shared room can save hundreds a month.
- Level of care: most places add a care fee on top of rent, and it rises as needs grow.
- Memory care: dementia care usually adds $1,000 or more a month.
- Location: Clovis often runs a bit higher than Fresno, and outlying towns often run lower.
- Size: small board and care homes usually cost less than large communities.

- Level-of-care or "points" fees, and how often they’re reassessed
- Medication management fee
- Incontinence supplies and care
- Second-person fee for couples
- How much rent went up each of the last two years
